About Tokaido General Store

Tokaido General Store opened its door on November 15, 2025 on Central Street in Evanston, Illinois. We travel to Japan, big cities and small towns, every year. In addition to traditional, authentic Japanese designs and products, we constantly see how American vintage is reimagined with Japanese taste and quality in mind. The Japanese American fusion has its own practicality, charm, and innovation. We opened Tokaido General Store hoping to document and showcase a unique way of living that combines Japanese craftsmanship with American lifestyle. Tokaido General Store is also a marketplace where you discover Japanese makers from places outside of Tokyo and Kyoto.

This is such a beautifully curated shop, yet it feels completely unpretentious and approachable. It’s a wonderful place to discover new culinary delights, especially if you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen. The staff is warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. What a pleasure to visit.

Fun and inspiring store for the home cook, decorator and anyone interested in a bit of Asian flare to their day. Great place to find unique noodles, miso, soy sauce and other elements for making that meal at home just a bit more special. Stop across the street for some tea while at it.

I can buy yuzu spread and anko! Tokaido is a great place. The person who assisted me was quite enthusiastic about Japanese history. The store will soon be stocked with ice cream too.
